The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter

Tale of the Bamboo Cutter

In a time long past, amidst the serene landscapes of ancient Japan, lived an old bamboo cutter named Taketori no Okina. His life was simple yet filled with the quiet joy of working with nature. Each day, he ventured into the verdant bamboo groves, where the rustling leaves whispered secrets of the past and future.

One fateful evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting golden hues across the land, Taketori no Okina discovered something extraordinary. Deep within the heart of the grove, a single bamboo stalk glowed with an ethereal light. With trembling hands, he cut the stalk open, and to his amazement, inside lay a tiny, radiant girl, no bigger than his thumb.

Filled with awe and wonder, Taketori no Okina gently cradled the luminous child and took her home to his wife. They named her Kaguya-hime, meaning “Radiant Princess,” and decided to raise her as their own. From that moment on, their lives were forever changed.

Kaguya-hime’s Childhood and the Gifts

Kaguya-hime grew rapidly, transforming into a stunningly beautiful young woman, her grace and elegance unmatched. The old bamboo cutter and his wife cherished her dearly. Strangely, from the day they found her, each time Taketori no Okina cut a bamboo stalk, he would discover gold coins inside. This newfound wealth transformed their humble life into one of prosperity. Yet, the mystery of Kaguya-hime’s origins lingered in their minds.

As Kaguya-hime grew, she often gazed at the moon with a wistful expression, a look of longing that puzzled her adoptive parents. They wondered if her destiny lay beyond the earthly realm.

The Suitors and Impossible Tasks

Word of Kaguya-hime’s beauty spread far and wide, attracting suitors from across the land, eager to win her hand in marriage. However, Kaguya-hime, wise beyond her years, set seemingly impossible tasks for each suitor, stating that only the one who could bring her the treasures she desired would be worthy. The treasures she requested included:

  1. The stone begging bowl of the Buddha from India.
  2. A jeweled branch from the mythical island of Horai.
  3. The legendary robe of the fire-rat from China.
  4. A colored jewel from a dragon’s neck.
  5. The cowrie shell born of swallows.

Despite their efforts, all suitors failed, their quests ending in disappointment, revealing the futility of their desires and the purity of Kaguya-hime’s heart.

The Reveal with Kaguya-hime’s True Identity

One moonlit night, as the full moon hung low in the sky, Kaguya-hime gathered her parents and revealed the truth. She was not of this world but a celestial being from the Moon, sent to live on Earth as a punishment. Now, her time on Earth was coming to an end, and she must return to her lunar home.

The old couple, heartbroken, pleaded with her to stay, but her fate was sealed. On the appointed night, celestial beings descended in a chariot of clouds, taking Kaguya-hime away. As she ascended to the heavens, she left behind a letter and a small vial of elixir for her parents, as a token of her eternal love and gratitude.

The Journey of a Suitor

Among the suitors was a young noble named Prince Ishitsukuri. Determined to win Kaguya-hime’s heart, he embarked on a perilous journey to find the jeweled branch of Horai. After months of travel and facing numerous dangers, he reached the island, only to discover the branch was a myth. Heartbroken and humbled by the realization, he returned empty-handed, having learned the value of true humility and the futility of superficial desires.

Epilogue

The tale of Kaguya-hime, the radiant princess, became a legend, passed down through generations. It is a story of love, loss, and the eternal bond between parent and child, transcending the boundaries of heaven and earth. Taketori no Okina and his wife, though deeply saddened, found solace in the memory of their time with Kaguya-hime and the knowledge that she would always watch over them from the moonlit sky.
